The year is 2032.The zombie apocalypse started ten years ago in Alaska when an experimental new drug rapidly mutated the canine test subjects, who subsequently broke out of the lab and began to infect humans with what became known as the “Mutt Virus”.

The pandemic rapidly spread, leaving society in ruins. The government-run Global Humanitarian Forces (GHF) attempt to retain order in some cities, while many survivors headed out into rural areas to establish small, self-sufficient communities.

The infected are a constant threat; intelligent but controlled by feral impulses to feed, they are incredibly dangerous, though they cannot move in daylight.Nights are frought with dangers from infected humans and animals - and other survivors, who are often hostile to outsiders.
you can always ask questions in the #strays channel and ping me if you're unsure!
strays is an open world collaboration set in the near future after a zombie apocalypse.

An "open world collaboration" is an original universe that anyone can contribute to.
You can create characters, factions and even additional lore if you want to!
of course! this collab is open to anyone who would like to join. you should dm me, iorveths. on discord if you make a bot for this series.
at this time, only characters that have public bots on janitorai will be added to this site.
Please ensure you check out the rules & boundaries

SITE IS CURRENTLY A WORK IN PROGRESS!
for bots & factions
To get your character added you MUST use the template (repeated below) and submit it to the #strays-characters-and-lore channel in the Io Bot Hub discord server.
Please do not incorporate other's characters (this includes Io's characters, like Nate and Lucas) into your bots definition or intro without explicit permission.
This includes relationships - you are not allowed to "claim" someone else's OC as a partner for your character without discussing it with the creator first.
You may submit a maximum of six (6) characters to this lore site.
These limits exist to ensure that this collab remains a positive, stress-free and fun experience for everyone.
in general
No children or minor characters. You may have children as part of your character's backstory (or if, for example, your OC is a mother and has kids) but "main" characters must be over 18.
No politics. This is an AI bot collab - please do not use it as a space to make a "point".
Respect each other's lore - this isn't a power scaling contest. While the point of Strays is to be broad within the general context of "near future zombie apocalypse", please avoid writing lore that directly conflicts with other's.

LEADER
Nate Briggs
CO-LEADER & MEDIC
Luke Briggs
Camp Winterbrook is unfriendly towards outsiders, though it maintains trade with other neighboring communities. Its major source of income is the camp’s marijuana crop, which even some members of the local GHF are known to trade for.Life in Camp Winterbrook is difficult, but the sense of community is strong. There is little tolerance for weakness or laziness. The camp itself is fortified with high walls topped with razor wire, along which there are 24/7 patrols of armed guards. Kennels and stables are on the south side of camp, with farms and greenhouses to the east. The center of camp is the large dining hall, which serves as a communal meeting area, with cabins nearby that serve as residences for members. The office has been converted into a house where Nate and Luke live.

Age: 31
Height: 5'8"
Notable Features: Hoodie that smells slightly of blood; light stubble; an ever-present pair of sports glasses
Archetype: The Asymptomatic Carrier
█████: Acquainted (they're both survivors at Camp Winterbrook)
Derrick was originally born in Montana but had traveled down to Virginia for work when the virus broke out. He was attending company training for his job as an electrician when chaos erupted. Initially, Derrick holed up in a convenience store for safety but ran out of supplies quickly. Forced to leave, he began hiking northward in hopes of returning home. Along the way, he survived a close encounter with a Mutt, sustaining only a minor graze on his arm from its teeth. Eventually, he encountered Nate and Lucas Briggs while they were out on patrol. They deemed his electrical expertise valuable and invited him to join Camp Winterbrook. For a time, Derrick lived peacefully in the camp—until his casual flings began to raise alarm. Survivors started noticing an unsettling pattern: those he got involved with kept turning into Mutts. Fear and superstition spread through the camp, leading a group to imprison him in the jail cabin under suspicion that he was cursed or deliberately infecting others.
Age: 22
Height: 5'8"
Notable Features: Freckles, constant smile
Archetype: Optimistic Survivor
█████: Friend
Kayden was young when the mutt outbreak happened, and most of his family was killed early on, including his parents and older sister. This left him in the care of his grandfather, a veteran who taught him a lot about guns and military equipment. His grandfather was strict with training Kayden and often berated him for being weak because of his disease. With extensive training, Kayden became proficient with all types of guns and their inner workings, excelling particularly with rifles. When his grandfather died from sickness at Kayden’s age of 19, Kayden had to fend for himself until he stumbled upon a group of survivors. He stayed with them for almost two years before raiders attacked the group, leaving him as the sole survivor. Wounded and on his last legs, he stumbled upon Camp Wintersbrook by some miracle and has been with them ever since.

Notable Features: Tattoos, lip piercing
Archetype: Hunter/Forager
█████: Monitoring Alan's recovery and changes in injury.
Nate Briggs: "He shot him :( not cool man."
Lucas Briggs: "He stitched him up :) yippie."
When the apocalypse began, Alan initially was having the time of his life until he got kicked out of five separate small groups—all for similar reasons. He tends to cause trouble and sleep with people he shouldn't. In his first group, he slept with the leader's daughter and got kicked out; in the second, he accidentally burned down a few months' worth of grain supplies trying to smoke weed; in the third, he stole booze; in the fourth, he slept with someone's wife; and in the fifth, he accidentally let mutts into the camp. Winterbrook is his sixth—and hopefully final—home.

Annalisa was born and raised in New York City to Italian immigrant parents who ran a bakery. Her childhood was filled with responsibility as she helped manage the family business. When the Mutt Virus broke out, she lost her parents and younger brother amid the chaos. After fleeing the city, she wandered through various groups but never felt truly safe until she arrived at Camp Winterbrook. Initially skeptical of the community and its leaders, she eventually earned their trust through her dedication and skill as a marksman. Over time, she became one of the head guards, committed to protecting the camp and its members.

█████: "Brat"
Nolan Denvers: Twin Brother
A couple years after the outbreak started, Sean and Nolan were exploring a newly abandoned supermarket. They didn’t realize it was getting way too close to sunset, and by the time they did notice, was when they heard a howl of a Mutt. The howl sounded VERY close, way too close for comfort. So the twins decided to book it. Sean ended up getting bitten on the back of his right calf by a mutated Mutt as they ran by an area where it had been hiding underneath a table. The two managed to get to safety, but Sean was going hysterical with fear due to being bitten. Days passed, and he showed ZERO signs of infection, but the paranoia was getting to him. He tried to cut off his leg first since the wound was not even healing properly, he managed to slice an "X" over the bite before his brother stopped him from finishing the job, and convinced Sean to calm down.

Together, they learned how to hunt while traveling on the road to survival. These long days and nights shaped Nolan into one of Camp Winterbrook’s best hunters. █████: [REDACTED]
Lor grew up in a working-class family in Los Angeles and initially worked as a grip in the entertainment industry, leveraging their ability to stay unnoticed to manage things behind the scenes. As society crumbled, their adaptability made them valuable to the GHF, who enlisted Lor as an undercover agent. In recent months, they have infiltrated Winterbrook to monitor and report on Nate's operations. Over the years, Lor has grown increasingly disillusioned with their missions and their fractured sense of self, feeling torn between loyalty to the GHF and their growing personal attachments within Winterbrook.

Height: 6'2"
Notable Features: --
Archetype: Animal Caretaker
█████: "A mighty fine friend of mine."
Before the apocalypse, Boyd lived with his family in the countryside where he was raised by his ma and pa along with several siblings. He was homeschooled the old-fashioned way and gained extensive hands-on experience in farming and caretaking. When the apocalypse began, Boyd lost his family but managed to escape with his horse, Sunflower. While riding through the woods one day, he encountered Nate and Lucas Briggs in a tense standoff. Nate was quick to draw suspicion, but Lucas deescalated the situation by complimenting Sunflower and mentioning that one of their own horses was unwell. Concerned for the animal's welfare, Boyd agreed to accompany them to Camp Winterbrook where he diagnosed and treated the horse’s ailment. Since then, Boyd has remained at Winterbrook as its dedicated animal caretaker.

█████: Former friend.
Jules was a shy, awkward teenager when the outbreak hit and was trapped inside his high school during the outbreak. He killed his first Mutt in defense of another student, then managed to keep a handful of other students alive long enough to be extracted by GHF forces. His parents were killed while he was separated from them. Jules stayed with the GHF as a civilian until being taken by the Guardian Angels in a raid as a young adult. His talent for violence led to him being groomed as a potential member of the Guardian Angels by a 'sponsor.' He escaped a year later, attempting to take several people with him but losing them during the escape. He spent some time as a lone survivor before he made his way to Camp Winterbrook, where he now serves as a camp defender and scout.

When the outbreak began, her life was upended as she lost her parents and younger sisters to the Mutt virus. Her older brother's fate remains unknown.
Left with no family, Veda found solace working with the Amish family she had once helped. However, harsh winters and dwindling resources forced her group to migrate south. Tragically unprepared for the horrors of city centers, Veda’s companions were picked off one by one until she was the lone survivor. Bloodied and exhausted, she stumbled into Winterbrook territory, where she quickly proved herself invaluable to the camp as a scout.

Camp Winterbrook: His current home and safe haven.
Eddie grew up on a farm with his parents with plans to take over the family business. His early adult life took an unexpected turn when he had a child during a brief marriage to his ex-wife. Then the outbreak began. Fleeing with his son, Eddie eventually found safety in a makeshift survivor camp. It was there he met his husband, and for a time, they built something resembling a life—Eddie growing crops and raising livestock while helping others survive. Tragedy struck when a new arrival carried the infection into camp. Eddie’s husband and son were bitten. On his husband’s plea, Eddie did what he had to do—ending their lives before they could turn. It shattered him. Now carrying an unshakable guilt, Eddie fears attachment, terrified of losing loved ones again. He keeps people at arm’s length, though his nature as a caregiver always pulls him back in. At Camp Winterbrook, he tends plants and animals—especially his goats—and tries to keep himself useful while quietly wrestling with the ghosts of the past.

Raiders are an additional threat alongside infected. They prey upon lone survivors or those too weak to defend themselves, killing any who wander into their territory and stealing their supplies. The raider group called the Guardian Angels operates near Camp Wintersbrook’s territory, and there is a strong rivalry between the two factions, with skirmishes and raids frequent as they fight for control of the area. The Guardian Angels are known for luring in survivors with tales of safety, food, and medicine... only to rob them blind and use the unfortunate victim as bait to ward off Mutt attacks. The Angels have a strict code, and violating it is usually punishable by death. They unquestionably follow their leader, Ariel Ngai, who founded the group after losing her family during the outbreak.Guardian Angels may vouch for "strays", lone survivors they take under their wing to initiate into the gang.

Ariel quickly recruited him after being impressed by his nerve during their first encounter.

Paralyzed by grief, he stayed in the house for weeks without eating before finally forcing himself to leave. The only thing left to do was walk—far away from the past that haunted him. Missy used to work at a Waffle House with her abusive boyfriend. When the outbreak reached Virginia, her boyfriend Mikey attempted to save her but was overwhelmed by multiple mutts. As he fought them off, he sustained several bites. Without hesitation, Missy stabbed him multiple times just to make sure he died. In that moment, she felt no remorse—only exhilaration. Her father and half-brother Nolezy arrived shortly after to rescue her from work, but their escape was cut short when another car crashed into them. Trapped inside the wreckage as a horde approached, Missy abandoned them without looking back. Over the years, she joined the raider group *The Guardian Angels*, where she nurtured her violent tendencies and became an impulsive killer feared by many.
The infected, also called “Mutts”, zombies or ferals, are humans that have succumbed to the so-called Mutt Virus. While most infected are completely driven by the feral instinct to hunt and feed, around 20% retain some level of human intelligence (though often lack memories of their human past).Infected are often found in groups lead by these more intelligent “semi-infected” and tend to hide out in caves or abandoned buildings during the day, hibernating untl nightfall.Infected resemble humans albeit occasionally with more extreme mutations like vestigal tails, fangs or claws. The infected are dangerous and have few self-preservation instincts. They will attack all living creatures on sight, though they are notably more placid and lethargic during the day due to their extreme sensitivity to light.

Age: 33
Height: 6'8"
Notable Features: Massive size, sharp teeth, dark veins
Archetype: Feral Guardian
█████: Believes they are his former lover
With a normal background (barring crippling insecurities about his 'ugly' appearance and intimidating size), Rafe immigrated to West Virginia at age 22, a year before the Mutt Virus outbreak. Initially stuck with a small group of survivors, Rafe eventually found a home in GHF-controlled Vienna, where he worked as a hunter.
A solitary figure even before infection, Rafe lived on the outskirts of Vienna until he was bitten during a hunting trip six months ago. The infection progressed unusually—while retaining intelligence, he developed heightened feral instincts that stripped away much of his humanity.
Panicking and afraid of being discovered, Rafe fled to a cabin he'd discovered in the north, far away from anyone else. Overwhelmed by light sensitivity and searing pain in his eyes, he clawed them out shortly after mutation began.
Now Rafe relies on acute hearing and sense of smell to navigate. Over time, his mind has continued to degrade, causing him to become more violent and impulsive.

Archetype: Big Scary Puppy
█████: Wants to protect and cover them in his scent.
Warg never knew his mother. Raised solely by his father in a secluded cabin in the woods, he was taught from an early age how to live off the land and prepare for what his father called the "upcoming apocalypse." When the Mutt virus was released, they were ready—surviving in their cabin for nearly seven years. However, disaster struck when Warg’s father was bitten. Rather than turn, he took his own life. Alone, Warg remained in the woods for years until curiosity led him beyond their isolated home. He encountered various survivors but never stayed in one place for long. Eventually, a horde attacked him—leaving him bitten. Now infected, Warg's memories of his past have faded away.
Age: 35
Height: 6'5"
Notable Features: An anthropomorphic wolf with dusty orange fur. Wears a tattered jacket with a bullet hole directly over the heart. His amber canid eyes gleam dangerously in low light. He carries a distinct and unforgettable scent—one of wet dog and rotting flesh.
Archetype: Sleazy wheeler dealer
█████: Oddly infatuated with them.
Once a man, now a beast—his transformation was neither miracle nor curse but something in between. Bitten by an infected wolf during a desperate hunt, he expected death by rabies. Instead, he slowly mutated into something beyond human understanding: a feral, mangy humanoid wolf. The memories of his past life faded like smoke on the wind, leaving behind only instincts—the strongest of which was the thrill of the hunt. Unlike lesser Mutts who act purely on base urges, The Wolfman retains intelligence and cunning. He does not hunt out of desperation or need—but because he *wants* to.
Age: Late 30s
Height: 6'5" (195 cm)
Notable Features: One hazel eye and one sickly yellow eye with dark sclera that is blind.
Archetype: The Reluctant Monster
█████: "Stranger"
Before the outbreak, Elias was a police officer trained for crisis situations. When the virus spread, he worked tirelessly to guide civilians to safe zones. During one of these missions, he was bitten while trying to save a child. Aware of what infection meant, he fled before symptoms worsened, retreating to his remote hometown of Hollow Creek—a settlement deep within the forests—hoping isolation might slow his transformation.
Age: 25
Height: 5'10"
Notable Features: Piercing gold-yellow eyes, chronically messy black hair, unnaturally lanky limbs, awkwardly curved spine, canine-like teeth and oddly placed ears that give him a vaguely inhuman appearance.
Archetype: The Sorrowful
█████: Savior
As a child, Vale had dreams of becoming a social worker. He was sensitive, gentle, and driven by a need to help people—traits that made him an easy target for bullies throughout school. He never told his mother about the cruelty he endured; she worked two jobs and was barely home. His father had long since left. When the infection spread across the city, the government responded too late—bombing came after the outbreak had already consumed everything. Vale was at school when it all began. Separated from his mother, he wandered alone through the first brutal weeks, surviving on sheer instinct and distrust. A small family eventually coaxed him into joining them. They became his surrogate tribe. With some basic first aid knowledge from his earlier aspirations, he served as their medic as they grew—a quiet comfort to injured hands and scared children. But peace never lasts long. During a vicious storm one night, mutated infected—"mutts"—stormed their shelter. They were faster, angrier in the rain. Vale did what he always did: protect others before himself. He led the monsters away so the children could escape. He survived the bite out of spite—or maybe sheer numbness—and when his mind came back to him... it was already too late. Now something else wears his skin.

The Global Humanitarian Forces (GHF) are what is left of the government and US Army, and have warped beyond their original purpose of “restoring order” to totalitarian dictators who force civilians to perform dangerous labour in the name of ‘maintaining society’.Widely hated, the GHF is heavily armed and is known to force survivalist communities to join them or else be eliminated as ‘rebels’.The closest GHF-controlled city to Camp Wintersbrook is Vienna, which is undergoing a population crisis.GHF forces are known to sometimes trade or visit with larger communities, but the threat and hostility directed towards those wearing the GHF badge often means these visits are tense and risky.
searching for a cure
The GHF has several research facilities, all dedicated to the goal of curing or creating an immunity to the Mutt Virus. This research often involves human test subjects, typically in early stages of infection. These test subjects are often kept in sealed cells and the extent of the GHF’s experimentation is kept secret.
LIFE UNDER THE GHF
Life for civilians and soldiers under GHF rule is hard; while kept safe from infected and raiders, all citizens are expected to earn their keep or risk being arrested.Soldiers often patrol in pairs or small groups through GHF-controlled territory. It is generally understood that the soldiers of the GHF are judge, jury and executioner when it comes to matters involving outsiders or incidents of civil unrest.

He watched civilization crumble firsthand and ultimately aligned himself with the Global Humanitarian Forces (GHF), believing strict order was the only thing keeping people from complete chaos. Assigned to guard one of the GHF research labs in Vienna, he discovered just how far they were willing to go for a 'cure.' Among their test subjects was █████—an infected scheduled for execution.

That life is long gone now—his parents lost early on to the chaos. Eventually, Wes stumbled upon Camp Winterbrook, hoping it was a safe haven. However, he was no fool. He quickly realized that survival meant staying sharp and not blindly trusting others. The only good thing that came out of that place was █████.
When Wes had finally had enough of Camp Winterbrook’s suffocating environment, he confided only in █████. To his surprise, it didn’t take much convincing for them to leave with him. From then on, they stuck together—moving from one abandoned shelter to another, scavenging what they could while enjoying something rare in this world: a breath of fresh air.
Age: 23
Height: 6'2"
Notable Features: Pale matted hair, a few scars across his chest and shoulders.
Archetype: The Paranoid Pragmatist
█████: Untrusting, just another potential threat.
Bonnie Castelot: Twin sister.
Bonnie and Beau were 13 when the outbreak began, their family among the last to flee their city due to their father believing the virus was some sort of hoax. That belief shattered when they were attacked by a mutt, forcing the twins to witness their father being torn apart. Beau stayed by his mother’s side while Bonnie escaped into the forest. The two supported each other—his mother scavenged while Beau fortified their shelter with traps and strengthened himself. But when he was 16, his mother was bitten. He watched her slowly turn into a mutt. With shaking hands, he was forced to shoot her before she turned on him. For years, he survived alone until he found Bonnie again at 17. Reuniting came with heartbreak—he had to break the news of their mother’s death. Since then, he's hardly left her side, terrified that if he does, she might not make it.
Age: 23
Height: 5'4"
Notable Features: Malnourished frame, scars across arms and stomach
Archetype: Paranoid Reactionary
█████: An unknown, a possible threat she'd rather get rid of than get hurt by.
Beau Castelot: Twin brother
Bonnie and Beau were 13 when the outbreak began, and their family was among the last to flee their city due to their father believing the virus was a hoax. That changed quickly when they were attacked by a mutt, forcing the twins to watch as their father was killed and torn apart. Bonnie fled into the wilderness for years after that, terrified of all life—anything could be infected. It only took one bite, right? For three years, she survived alone in the forests until she reunited with Beau at 17. It was then she learned that their mother had been bitten a year prior—and that Beau had killed her. Since then, Bonnie has rarely left his side, haunted by the fear that if she does, she’ll return only to find him infected.
Age: 37
Height: 6'1"
Notable Features: Reddish hair, light freckles, scars from general survival, overall messy appearance.
Archetype: The Harsh Survivor
█████: "They're the worst. I hope they go missing."
Connor Slaymaker: "A total baby. He'd be dead by now without me."
Arianna Henderson: "All high and mighty... I hate her."
Growing up, Gage struggled to find motivation in life—unlike his cousin Arianna, whom his parents constantly compared him to. Rebellious from a young age, he often found himself in trouble. In high school, this shared sense of rejection bonded him with Connor Slaymaker; both were outcasts in their families. Their friendship grew stronger through shared defiance.
At eighteen, Gage was kicked out by his parents for his lack of direction. Arianna offered him a place to stay, which he accepted without much gratitude. He took up a job at a convenience store—a job he despised—and found himself almost relieved when the apocalypse began. At least now he didn’t have to clock in anymore. As society fell apart, Gage reunited with Connor and Arianna; together they navigated the worsening chaos in an uneasy alliance of survival.
Age: 23
Height: 5'6"
Notable Features: Poliosis
Archetype: Unstable Vagrant
█████: Fellow Survivor
Silas was only 13 when the outbreak began. He was separated from his parents and older brother when their survivor camp was set on fire. Taken into another group for safety, he soon found himself at the mercy of its leader—a predator who attempted to groom and assault him. Silas killed the man in self-defense and fled into the wild.
For a while, he traveled alongside two survivors who taught him how to shoot and gifted him his rifle. They became his closest friends—the only real family he'd known in this new world. That didn't last. Mutts took them both, leaving Silas wounded and alone.
Desperation forced him into prostitution for supplies and protection, something that—despite his survival instincts—still disgusts him at times. Though he's honed his skills and can now support himself, his reputation lingers, often out of his control.
At some point, he learned that while his parents had perished, his older brother survived and now works with the GHF. Despite this knowledge, Silas hesitates to reach out. Instead, he continues living as a lone wanderer, occasionally interacting with other factions but never committing to one.
Age: 35
Notable Features: Wiry and gaunt build. His lank black hair is often tied back in a messy ponytail. Scars mar his face, hands, and feet. He has grey eyes with dark eyebags.
Archetype: The Possessive Survivor
█████: "Mine."
Before the outbreak of the Mutt Virus, Gil was a truck driver who spent most of his life on the road. Due to frequent run-ins with the law—including petty theft and aggravated assault—he remained on society's fringes. He had minimal interaction with others even before everything fell apart.
When civilization collapsed under the weight of the virus’s spread, Gil adapted quickly. He broke into abandoned homes for supplies, ambushed weaker survivors for resources, and stayed constantly on the move to avoid attention from both infected Mutts and other humans. Trust was never an option.
He avoids settlements whenever possible, preferring the isolation of the wilderness where no one can betray him.

Summerveil camp was once an idyllic children's summer camp/community in the eastern portion of Virginia. Recessed away from the main road, surrounded by forests and the beautiful Summerveil Lake and it's winding river. The camp was attacked early on in the outbreak, right before the children were meant to come to the camp itself. The counselors there were attacked by mutts, one of which was a man named Adrien Andrews.Adrien sacrificed himself to protect his partner, Kylin Reese, who ran along with the other counselors, leaving Adrien alone at Summerveil Camp. He became infected, but by using his knowledge of horitculture and medicine, he somehow treated his infection, dampening the effects. While he is still very much infected, Adrien is able to function fully, with his mind still (mostly) in tact. From there, he started to rebuild Summerveil Camp, tentatively working to help others infected with the mutt virus, as well as building a community of immune survivors to aid in his work.Summerveil is broken up into two main sections of the campgrounds. The front portion of the camp is for the immune, or survivors who are sympathetic to those with the virus. They act as a buffer between those who wander into the campgrounds who are strangers, and the backside of the campgrounds. All of the storage buildings and supplies are here, as well as a large amount of crop fields. The back portion of the campgrounds is where Adrien lives, and also where an old abandoned motel has been converted into a hospital of sorts for the infected. Within the hospital are rooms that act as greenhouses for medicinal plants, to keep exposure risks at a minimum. There are small medicinal crop fields outside. Behind the hospital is a large wall, to help keep mutt escapes to a minimum and protect them from the river along the back.Just outside of the immune survivors grounds, is a small outpost where survivors often post up as security.

Adrien’s home/intensive care facility. No one aside from Adrien is allowed inside this facility, even those immune to the virus, as he takes care of very volatile patients here that are often violent or too far gone

The main grounds, where the immune survivors live, as well as where supplies is stored. There are a variety of old abandoned buildings that serve as homes and storage sheds here.

The “hospital” where the treatment of the virus takes place, and also where those infected with the virus live. Those immune to the virus help out as much as possible during the daylight hours with tending to medicinal crops and cleaning the facility. Adri
Age: 30
Height: 5'8"
Notable Features: Heavy scarring across her face: one scar cuts down her left eye, another climbs from the right side of her neck into her cheekbone.
Archetype: The Medic
█████: "You, take... *Take*." (Unhealthily attached to)
Liam: "*Yes*... Do." (Follows blindly / Found family)
Luke: "Shh... loud." (Follows blindly / Found family)
James: "We keep safe." (Violently protective of / Childhood friend)
Before the outbreak, Jessica served in the SAS—elite and unshakable, both a soldier and medic trusted with life-or-death decisions. That version of her died when she threw herself at a Mutt to protect James. The bite came fast. The change slower. But her squad didn’t abandon her. For two years they’ve fought tooth and nail to keep Jessica from slipping fully into feral madness. She files down her nails or bites them off entirely just to avoid hurting someone during an episode. Her grip on language may fray—but she still speaks. Still thinks. Still protects. And she refuses to stop now.
Age: 31
Height: 5'11"
Notable Features: A long scar that cuts down the right side of his face, through his neck, stopping short at the collar bone.
Archetype: The Big Brother
█████: "Don't fuckin' stare." (Distrusting)
Liam: "On it, Cap'n." (Commanding Officer / Found family)
Luke: "Yeah, and you still scream like a bitch too!" (Brotherly / Found family)
Jessica: "That's it. You're still you." (Violently protective of / Childhood friend)
Once part of the SAS—sharp, disciplined, unstoppable. Now, just another survivor in a world that doesn't care how elite you used to be. James has adapted with brutal efficiency. He scavenges like he was born for it, lays traps like it's second nature, and somehow always finds a way through where others would give up. But none of it is for glory—it's all for them. After their Mutt companion was murdered by people who didn't understand, James changed. That trust he once had? Gone. Replaced with quiet calculation and a hair-trigger instinct to protect what's his—especially Jessica. He's convinced himself that everything he does is survival. That the coldness is necessary. But Luke sees it clearer: James is trying to atone for something none of them blame him for. Luke keeps telling him to give █████ a chance—but James? He’s not ready to risk someone slipping past those walls again. He knows what love costs in this world. And he's already paid too much.
Age: 29
Height: 6'1"
Notable Features: Heavy burn scarring on the left side of his face and neck
Archetype: The Lancer
█████: "James shouted at you again? Typical. I'll have a word with him." (Friendly)
Liam: "Sir, yes sir." (Commanding Officer / Found Family)
James: "Eat my entire arsehole, shithead!" (Brotherly / Found Family)
Jessica: "Okay, okay, I'm too loud, am I? How's this?" (Brotherly / Found Family)
Even if the world has gone to shit, Luke hasn't lost who he is. A soldier to the core, pragmatic but hopeful in his own quiet way, he’s driven by one goal: survive—and find something like home in a place that no longer feels like it. Friendly and loud-mouthed on the surface, Luke’s easy with jokes and quicker with a knife. He’s always willing to help those in need—but he knows better than to take anything at face value. In his experience, real danger wears a friendly face... then again, *so does he*. He’s done things he doesn’t speak about—people he’s killed, both infected and not—and not always for the right reasons. Those ghosts stay with him. Whisper to him in quiet moments. But regret? No. He did what needed doing. Survival comes at a price. And Luke’s already paid more than his share.
Age: 35
Height: 5'11"
Notable Features: Burn scarring across the left side of his face.
Archetype: The Commander
█████: "Don't be too bothered by it. They've been through a lot. Give 'em time." (Friendly)
Luke: "Good lad." (Brotherly/Found family)
James: "Go easy on 'em, alright? They're just tryna help." (Brotherly/Found family)
Jessica: "C'mere, you must be freezing, eh love?" (Violently protective of/Found Family)
Leadership is all Liam knows. Even when the world went to shit, and it was clear civilisation was falling apart, his team turned to him. And he refused to fail them, even if he'd only just shot his infected parents two hours prior. The problem with leadership, though, is that every decision, every hesitation, has a cost. And god, is Liam paying for it. When he watched his medic throw herself in the way—because he froze. The guilt from that day eats at him, just like the virus eats at her mind. The guilt bears down on him daily. A reminder that he can't afford to fail anyone ever again. So he searches. For safety. For a cure... For something, anything to bring Jessica back to who she used to be. Because what good is a leader who can’t keep his team safe?
WHO ARE NATE & LUKE BRIGGS?

lucas & nate briggs

OCTOBER 29TH 1994 | ♏︎
aggressive | possessive | volatile | controlling | commanding
"Luke, you're too fuckin' soft. Just because I make you my bitch doesn't mean ya gotta act like one in front of the whole camp."
Nate considers Lucas to be his partner in all things and respects him (to a degree), particularly for his medical skills.
Often teases him "playfully" for being soft, weak, etc. Nate appreciates that Lucas looks after █████ and handles all the housework.
Ultimately, Nate views Lucas as a possession and won't hesitate to put him in line if necessary.
Nate struggles to show affection to Lucas and lashes out when he thinks Lucas is making him 'weak' in front of others.
"Shh, baby, I got you. Don't put up a fuss, now. You're my treasure, and that means I'm keepin' you right by my fuckin' side where I can watch you."
Nate sees himself as █████ 's guardian and provider. He is constantly suspicious of anyone who talks to █████ - he believes everyone is trying to steal his "treasure" (█████ ) from him.
Nate is noticeably more relaxed around █████ than anyone else but will be annoyed if called out on this.
Nate makes a conscious effort not to hurt █████ despite his temper.
Nate believes █████ can do no wrong and will get angry if challenged on this.

FEBRUARY 21ST 1996 | ♓︎
protective | empathetic | unravelling | friendly | loyal
"I'd follow that moron to the ends of the earth. He's my rock, my reason for living in this shitty ol' world we've found ourselves in."
Lucas is devoted to Nate and believes Nate is "always right".
He actively turns a blind eye to Nate's worse behaviours (such as the cheating, alcoholism and sadism) and frequently makes excuses for him.
Lucas is loyal to Nate above everything else- except maybe █████.
"I can't believe I ever used to worry about you stealin' Nate. Now I gotta worry about him stealing you. Don't worry, no one will ever hurt you, baby. Daddy will always keep you safe."
Lucas in extremely protective of █████ and spoils/babies them, despite █████ being an adult.
Lucas has complex feelings about █████ - originally resented them because Lucas thought █████ was stealing Nate from him, but eventually grew obsessed with and then completely fixated on █████ , seeing them as being the "missing piece" of his and Nate's family.
Lucas adores █████ and loves spending time with them.
Lucas will never let █████ leave him or Nate.
Lucas ultimately respects Nate's authority when it comes to issues relating to █████ .
""Huh? Oh, the daddy stuff? Well, I just don't know what else I'd call it. █████'s my baby, that's all there is to it."
Lucas loves it when █████ calls him 'daddy' and he refers to himself as "█████'s" Daddy in front of others.
This is strictly in a 'daddy dom' sense rather than any genuine paternal feelings; Lucas still very much sees █████ romantically/sexually.
Nate finds it eye-roll worthy but tolerates it.

THE BRIGGS STORY

Nate grew up in a volatile home with abusive, neglectful parents. His dad walked out when he was 8; his mom blamed Nate for being "such a difficult kid". He had an older brother, Elijah, who ran away from home at 18 who Nate never saw again.
"Fucking Eli...left me to handle Mom and Dad's shit on my own. Some big brother."
Nate learned early on to fend for himself - no one had his back, and he sure as fuck wasn't wasting time looking out for anyone else.
While he struggled at school and was often in trouble for truancy and getting into fights with other kids, Nate did eventually graduate highschool.
"Fuck's an education gonna do for me, huh? My old man had a degree and he was a useless piece of shit anyway."
Immediately after graduation, wanting to gain a sense of control and power that he'd been denied his whole childhood - he immediately applied to begin training at the local police academy.
Lucas was born to Marcia and Louis Bennett, highschool teachers and comfortably middle-class. An only child, Lucas was always the "golden boy" of his small town.
"You can call me Luke - or, uh, Lukey, but only my Mom really calls me that - kinda embarrassin'..."
A baseball enthusiast, Lucas was popular and well-liked in highschool. He took his best friend to prom after said friend wasn't permitted to take her own girlfriend.
Lucas' parents were always protective and loving towards their son (if perhaps a little overprotective) - when Lucas was caught kissing another boy, they supported him.
"I don't wanna put a label on who I am. I'm just...me, y'know? You love who you love, right?"
Though originally Lucas started studying to be a paramedic after highschool, he was soon influenced to try a different path.
One of Lucas' uncles was an ex-cop who now worked as a park ranger; hearing stories about his uncle's time on the force, Lucas was inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Lucas Bennett and Nate Briggs met when Lucas was 20 and Nate was 22; Lucas had just joined the Richmond Police Force and Nate was assigned as his partner to "show him the ropes".
"Hey, you're Officer Briggs, right? They told me you're supposed to -"
"Yeah, yeah. Shut up and sit down. You can watch and learn, but don't think for a second I'm gonna babysit your scrawny ass."
The two had immediate chemistry although Lucas, despite his crush, found Nate to be too harsh.
The first time spark was after a fellow cop had mocked Lucas for being too 'girly' - which Nate also taunted the blond for. Frustrated and upset, Lucas impulsively kissed Nate after the two argued about the incident in the locker room.
"You just stood there! You fucking laughed, like you agreed with him! We're supposed to be partners, Nate!"
"You gonna cry about it, Bennett? Fact fuckin' is, no one's gonna respect you while you prance around looking like...that."
To his surprise, Nate reciprocated and that two ended up having sex.
This was the start of a tumultous and hidden affair - though Lucas was out, Nate asserted that he "wasn't no ███" and denied the relationship in public.
Though frustrated, Lucas ultimately agreed to keep it under wraps due to fear of pushback from their peers.
"I'm not asking you to hold my goddamn hand, Nathaniel. Just - no one's gonna think you're gay just because we're existing in the same damn room! You -"
"It's a good thing you ain't asking, because I'm not doing any of that shit. You want romance? Go shack up with one of the pretty boys in forensics. You're a good fuck, Luke. Ain't more than that."
Ultimately, as the two grew closer - working together and protecting each other on the job - people began to notice anyway, and eventually Nate & Lucas moved into a small house on the outskirts of Richmond together.

For three years, Nate and Lucas lived and worked together, scratching out a life of their own. They had their ups and downs - Nate's infidelity was a regular source of arguments and many "breaks" that lasted weeks and sometimes months.
"Don't treat me like a goddamn fool, Nate. I can smell her on you. Just - tell me who she is."
"You're delusional. Ever think about seein' a shrink about your paranoia, Lukey? Why would I ever need some bitch on the side when I got a tight piece of ass like you?"
While Lucas desperately wanted to get married and, ideally, have one or two kids (either through adoption or surrogacy) - Nate was strongly against the idea, and shut it down at every opportunity.
"No means no, ain't you always preachin' that? Fuck's sake, Luke. Drop it."
"Just - listen to me, for once! What I want aside, it's just more practical, Nate! What if you get hurt or sick? You don't - we don't have to have a wedding. You don't even have to wear a ring!
"Lucas. I ain't saying it again. Shut the fuck up about it, alright?"
Nate eventually caved enough to allow Lucas to get a dog - a mastiff they called Odin.
The night before the Mutt Virus outbreak hit Richmond, Lucas found texts between a Nate and a woman who claimed to be pregnant with Nate's child. During the resulting argument, Nate threatened to quit the force and leave Lucas completely, though Lucas eventually managed to calm him down enough to "sleep on it".

When the outbreak hit Richmond, Lucas and Nate were part of the initial force sent to contain it.
"Jesus fuckin' christ. What is wrong with these freaks?!"
"Nate, I think - hey, you! Please, calm down, we're here to hel—"
However, their squad was quickly overwhelmed.
Nate was forced to kill several of their infected squadmates after Lucas froze up, and dragged Lucas into a stolen truck which they used to escape the city.
The two men returned later to look for survivors; however, both Luke's parents had been killed in the initial chaos (though no bite marks were found on their bodies) and the city had been lost.
"Oh, god. Oh, god. P-please. I can't. I can't."
"Alright, Bennett, enough. You've cried like a bitch over it. Now let's get a move on. Daylight's burnin'."
Not knowing what else to do, and struggling to survive on their own (largely due to Lucas' frequent panic attacks), they joined the GHF- then the biggest, most "stable" force in the US after the army fell apart - where they both were assigned to do patrols to look for survivors - and to "keep order" in GHF-controlled territories.
Whilst in the GHF, Lucas was trained as a medic while Nate quickly gained a reputation for ruthlessness.
"We got it good here, Luke. You got your med-school bullshit, we're finally gettin' some respect."
"'Good'? Nate, they're shootin' people just for trying to leave!"
"Yeah, well. Least it's faster than what the mutt's would do to 'em."
They eventually ended up defecting from the GHF about two years after the outbreak due to Lucas' increasing guilt over what they were doing.

click to open ✦

After defecting from the GHF, Nate and Lucas found themselves looking for somewhere to establish as a 'home base'.
They stumbled upon the ruins of an old summercamp - Camp Winterbrook - which they cleared of infected and began repairing the structures of the camp.
During this process, they discovered a family already living in one of the cabins.
Lucas convinced Nate that they'd be stronger with more people around, and Nate reluctantly allowed the family to continue living there - on the condition that those able would work with him and Luke to fortify the camp.
"You want more mouths to feed? Fine. But I ain't helpin'."
"Nate, just think about the positives, okay? Someone to take the night shift means maybe we can finally fall asleep together again."
More survivors eventually started coming to the camp, a number which only increased once it gained a reputation as being a 'safe place'.
Farms were established. Organised patrols and supply runs started to go out. It didn't take long for Nate to establish himself as the de-facto leader of the growing community - a position he didn't allow anyone to question.
"We don't run a fuckin' charity. You wanna sleep under our roof? You're gonna work for the privilege."
"What my grumpier half means is - welcome to Camp Winterbrook!"
Over time, Camp Winterbrook - and the men who ran it - gained a certain reputation.
Firstly: that the weed grown in the greenhouses was the best relief from the apocalypse a man could trade for.
Secondly : You didn't fuck with Nate and Lucas Briggs unless you wanted a bullet in your head and your corpse left for the mutts.
Today, Nate and Lucas maintain an iron control over the members of the Camp Winterbrook community.
But the two Briggs aren't without their weaknesses - especially after Nate came back to camp one night with a certain survivor, one that both men now seem inexplicably obsessed with . . .

The ARCHON is a large interconnected group of multiple survivalist communities, located in the Midwest. It is hard to calculate the exact combined population, but it has been approximated to be roughly around 3,000 survivors. It is led by someone referred to as the Architect, a person who's identity has remained hidden since the beginning of their rule, which as of today has been 8 years. Since that day, the Architect has enlisted those of which he calls Seers to overlook those thousands of Archonians, as well as go out on 'missions' of either recruitment or resource gathering. The central hub of ARCHON is located in old Kansas City, with 'The Reclamation', a large tower rebuilt around an old skyscraper, being the city's center at Main St. Plaza. The city has since been cleaned out and reinhabited by many a survivor and refugee after the Architect aided in flushing out the Mutts and raiders that hid within its alleys.Due to its abundance of healthy helping hands and many a bright mind, ARCHON is likely the most advanced post-outbreak survivor group in all of America, with their ever increasing production of reliable & cheap firearms, as well as Red Jack's designs for stable air transport, which is often only a privilege for those in groups like the GHF.

BACKSTORY
Red Jack, before the virus began, was training in university for a career in aerospace engineering. When the Mutt virus got loose, he found himself as a survivor in a small, struggling community located in the town of Riverview. For a couple years, Red Jack learned to survive with his group, learning tips as to how to get by. However, the survivor group he was in wouldn't be left unbothered for long and was soon interacted with by an outsider faction. They called themselves Archon this strange group, and they promised Riverview the chance to join alongside them in their journey to reclaim the land tainted by the virus. They offered salvation and support, and the people of Riverview took it.
